Self-employed tax debt: plan for the next tax year

Self-employed income can change from week to week while tax obligations remain on the calendar. When you are also addressing an old balance, separate the old debt project from the current-year planning project. Both need attention, and a clear routine helps keep one from crowding out the other.

Know what current-year planning addresses

The IRS explains that estimated tax is used to pay income tax and other taxes, including self-employment tax, when required. Requirements depend on the taxpayer’s circumstances; use current IRS instructions to determine the applicable payments and dates. IRS: Estimated taxes (opens in a new tab).

Avoid choosing a fixed percentage from someone else’s business as your entire plan. Income, deductible expenses, other household income, and prior payments all affect the discussion. Ask the preparer to explain the assumptions behind any estimated payment recommendation.

Make income and spending visible

Choose a repeatable day each month to organize receipts, review invoices, and reconcile account activity. Keep business documents separate from household documents so the same expense is not inadvertently counted twice. Note transfers and owner draws clearly instead of treating every movement of money as revenue or an expense.

Create a short list of unusual items to discuss: a large equipment purchase, a new contract, a business interruption, or a change in entity structure. You do not need to decide the tax treatment yourself to make sure the issue is raised.

Discuss old and new obligations together

Bring the older balance notices and the current income summary to the same planning conversation. Ask how a proposed debt payment fits alongside required current tax payments. Confirm which work is debt representation and which is return preparation or ongoing bookkeeping.
